After a sudden, dramatic, devastating breakup, Dex and Tracy tried their best to continue being good moms to their daughter Kendall. But they achieved this in a unique way. Family members acted as intermediaries, allowing Dex to see Kendall frequently without having any contact with Tracy. There were no visits, calls, emails, or texts exchanged between them. Since the night Dex was expelled from their home, they hadn't spoken a single word to each other.

Surprisingly, Kendall handled the separation very well. Her parents lived separate lives with no drama, yet remained heavily involved in Kendall's life. However, they were not involved in each other's lives. As Kendall prepares to graduate from college, her biggest wish is to have both Dex and Tracy present at her celebration. She knew early on that her mothers would never willingly share space, so she had to think outside the box.
